Illes du Salut

My mom send a message on inmarsat that she can not find the island on Google Earth, we thought its age and wanted to reply “you should imagine how difficult it is for us to find it at sea!” But now we know she was right, it’s not on Google earth! (One can see a few dark spots in the ocean with a lot of pictures. I can not show it on my blog-map, but it is 7 nm directly across Kourou.
The islands were used as a penal colony from 1852 onwards, earning them a reputation for harshness and brutality. This system was gradually phased out and has been completely shut down since 1953. Nowadays the islands are a popular tourist destination. The islands were featured in the novel by Henri Charriere, 'Papillon'. He was imprisoned here for 9 years. Salut islands consist of 3 islands: Ille du Diable (Devils Island) (was the political prison); Ille Royale (was the administration island and where we anchored); Ille Saint- Joseph (was the main prison where Papillion was locked up.)

We left early morning Ill da Mare. There were very little wind, we run the engine and had the big jib open. We arrived at about 3pm. enough time to set the anchor and enjoy a bottle of Boplaas Pinot Noir with French Camembert -, roquefort cheese, sausage and freshly home baked bread.

The first picture show our entry route to Degrad des Cannes, then the outgoing to Monkey Island and turning out to Salut. Second and third pictures is our arrival and anchorage at Salut.
