One of our favourite campsites is at Mirabib in the Namib Naukluft Park .The Namib-Naukluft is the largest game park in Africa and the fourth largest in the world. ‘Namib’ means open space and the Namib Desert gave its name to form Namibia – “land of open spaces”.
We had an amazing weekend, including a very interesting visit to Gobabeb research station with the best of guides, Polla.

The Open day at Gobabeb.
Gobabeb conducts research in the fields of ecology, climate and geomorphology. By conducting training courses Gobabeb aims to improve the public awareness and knowledge of dry land ecology and environmental issues.

The Palmato “web-footed” gecko. This charismatic species is found in the dune sea and has webbed feet, a unique trait that allows it to burrow into compacted sand. A nocturnal creature, it comes out to feed on dune ants and termites after dark. By licking its eyes, it collects dew drops that roll in on the fog that basks the desert each morning.

Like all other golden moles the build of these animals is similar to the moles, though they are not related, and is adapted to a life of digging. The front extremities are remodeled to digging claws; in contrast to most other species of its family they have three claws each. The tail is physically not visible, there are no auricles, the eyes are covered with fur, and the mouth is bearing a leather-like pad, which also serves for digging.  It "swims" through the sand just under or on the surface while searching for food. It is mainly a nocturnal animal,
