Jamaica 12 May 2013, Ocho Rios

Sparkling wine, Cuban cigars etc etc ... our custom after clearing into a new country!
We arrived Ocho Rios, Jamaica after a 21hr sail in moderate to strong winds and slightly higher than expected swell.
The friendly officials were not too upset about our lack of checking out papers from Cuba. We explained about the gearbox problem.
The gearbox was in Kingston waiting to be cleared.
In the mean time we offloaded the bicycles and took a cycling trip to St Ann’s and beyond. We visited the Fire Waters, a spring with combustible gas that when lighted up looks like the water is burning!

We joined hundreds others at Dolphin Cove for a refreshing ice-cold waterfall shower on the beach.

Lunch was at  the Jerk Centre where the real jerk method is followed: pimento logs (a savory wood like hickory) is placed over hot coals and the meat (hot spiced chicken or pork) is bar-b-q on the logs. The meat is smoked / cooked to perfection, really tasty and not to be missed!

Road cafe at St. Anns
Our cruising guide by Frank Virgintino recommended St Ann’s as the better anchorage than Ocho Rios and we wanted to check it out.
A big disappointment! The town is a dump and the anchorage not well protected and no safe place to land and leave your dinghy. This confirmed again what we think of the Frank Virgintino guides.
"much to be said for St. Anns"

They write the way they talk!

A lovely beach for a sun downer.
We much prefer Ocho Rios as it is very safe, free water from very helpful Marine police and quite beautiful. The only downside is the Jet Ski’s on week-ends.

Our favourite cafe, "UNDER THE STAIRS" with excellent food & drink @ affordable prices.
