Macarel and Lobsters |
On 6 March at 3 am we weighed anchor and left for the
Hobbies/ Cayo Cayones, 160NM East of The Bay Islands. It is a group of Islands
just north of the Viverellos and belongs to Honduras. There are only fishermen,
lobster and prawn boats and no authorities. Few sailors pass these islands on
their way to Panama… truly off the beaten track and paradise! We first learned
about these islands by Honoree and Walt from S/V Will of the wisp. (Thank you
for sharing your secret with us)

Sashimi, Carpacio & Cava |
We left at the tail end of a “Norther” and actually managed
to sail almost all the way. (Due to prevailing East winds, it is almost
impossible to make easting without using your engine.) It was not an easy sail
with up to 2m North chop mixed with East swell in North winds of 20 (gust at
25) to 30 (gust at 35KTs), BUT it was a fast sail! We arrived at 9am the
following morning doing 160NM in 30hrs.
We caught 2 small Tunas and a Spanish mackerel on the
way…mmm sashimi and Carpaccio with Sparkling wine!

Big Hogfish and Grouper |
In our wake were 4 sail boats from Canada and USA, Sea
Dragon, Cayote, Mojo and cat Fox Fire. They have been sailing together for a
couple of years and are on their way to Panama. Jaco went spearfishing with
them the next few days and soon realized they need help to get enough fish to
eat.
In the next few days we speared a lot of hogfish and some
grouper and snapper combined with Conch we had a feast.

The 3 South African Cats Safari, Tribe and Amphitrite, sailed in for a one night stop over on their way to Panama. I t was great to see them again and sad to see them leave. We are heading in opposite directions from here. |

Soon we were the only boat left with the two islands keepers
and their dogs. When the wind turned more East we anchored at N 16 01.869 W 83
06.196, in front of the small Island.
When another Norther came we went for protection behind Cayo
Harbach, N 16 03.635 W 83 08.604. When
this blew out we had at last a window to head for Grand Cayman or Cuba.
