Domburg

Domburg is a small village with a few small shops; good enough fruit and vegetable market, small butcher whom will order better meat on request and an Internet cafe. On Sundays there is a little open market selling take away food, which we regularly support. The locals meet on a square in front of Rita’s kafee. On weekends it is full of drinking men, their pimped up cars and loud boom boxes with unofficial sound-off competitions. Suriname is in general very dirty and polluted, but this squire is even a tad dirtier after a good Sunday evening gathering! (There is a huge problem with plastic and take away polystyrene boxes. Most small cafes serve the food in take away boxes or plastic cups.)
A very strange and popular sport in Suriname is the bird singing competitions. These are held on Sundays. During the week, all the participants take their birds out to hear noise and encourage their singing. One see men with birds in small cages all over town, in buses, some cages hanging from the electric wires on main streets, etc.Picture of a take away “bamie” and a week day “liming” (this is sitting, chatting and having something to drink) with their bird cages on the car roofs.
